What makes an award-winning college restaurant?
When people think about award-winning restaurants, college training restaurants are rarely the first venues that come to mind. Yet across the UK, college restaurants are delivering outstanding food, professional service, and innovative dining experiences that rival many commercial restaurants. The People 1st College Accreditation Scheme exists to shine a spotlight on these exceptional learning environments and the students, lecturers, and restaurant teams behind them.
Behind every service is a learning opportunity, with students gaining hands-on experience in real hospitality environments while guests enjoy high-quality food and service. It is this unique combination of education and excellence that makes college restaurants such a valuable part of the hospitality landscape.
As we approach the AA College Restaurant of the Year Award 2026, a prestigious opportunity for colleges within our accredited network, we’re reflecting on what sets outstanding college restaurants apart and how accreditation helps colleges achieve and maintain those standards year after year.
A commitment to excellence
Through annual inspection visits conducted with the AA Hotel and Hospitality Services, colleges within the People 1st Accreditation Scheme can achieve Silver or Gold Accreditation from People 1st, alongside AA College Rosette or Highly Commended Rosette recognition from the AA.
These inspections assess the quality of the overall learning environment, recognising colleges that consistently deliver high standards in hospitality education, food production, customer service, and student development.
For many colleges, accreditation provides both recognition of excellence and a framework for continuous improvement. It is this commitment to raising standards year after year that helps create the foundations of an award-winning college restaurant.
Outstanding hospitality and catering provision
There is no single route to success.
For Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group, excellence has been recognised through Gold Accreditation and a Centre of Excellence for Food & Beverage, highlighting the high standards demonstrated across its hospitality and catering provision.
For The Park Restaurant at Cambridge Regional College, success extends beyond accreditation. Alongside its Highly Commended AA College Rosette, the restaurant was recently named a winner in the Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards 2026, placing it among the top 10% of reviewed restaurants worldwide.
These achievements demonstrate how college restaurants can successfully combine education with the delivery of a professional-quality customer experience.
Developing future talent
At the heart of every award-winning college restaurant is a commitment to student success.
York College provides an excellent example, combining high-quality training facilities with an impressive track record in local and national competitions and a commendable 100% progression rate into higher education or employment.
Outstanding college restaurants do more than teach technical skills. They help students build confidence, professionalism, teamwork, leadership, and the adaptability required to succeed within a fast-moving hospitality industry.
Innovation and real-world learning
The best college restaurants continually evolve, providing students with opportunities to explore new ideas and broaden their experience.
At New College Durham, The Copper Pot’s ever-changing menus draw inspiration from seasonal ingredients and flavours from around the world. This approach reflects the innovation, breadth of experience, and real-world learning opportunities that help prepare students for successful careers in hospitality.
Creating environments where students can experiment, learn, and develop their creativity is a key characteristic shared by many of the UK’s leading college restaurants.
From accreditation to national recognition
For colleges participating in the AA College Restaurant of the Year Award, the benefits extend well beyond the competition itself.
The award provides a valuable opportunity to showcase student talent, celebrate excellence, and gain recognition from across the hospitality industry and beyond. It is one of the reasons many colleges return to the competition year after year.
Milton Keynes College Group’s The Brasserie is a prime example. Having been named AA College Restaurant of the Year 2018/19 and returning as runners-up in last year’s competition, the restaurant has built an impressive track record of success. Their achievements demonstrate both the consistently high standards being achieved across accredited college restaurants and the prestige associated with the award itself.
Success can also bring wider recognition. Last year’s winners, the brilliant Exeter College, received national coverage across BBC and ITV platforms following their achievement, demonstrating how accreditation and competition success can significantly elevate both reputation and reach.
Together, these examples highlight how the award not only celebrates excellence but also provides a platform for colleges to showcase the outstanding work taking place within their hospitality and catering provision.
More than an award
While only one college can be named AA College Restaurant of the Year 2026, the competition shines a spotlight on the exceptional work taking place across accredited college restaurants throughout the UK.
From Centres of Excellence and industry-standard training environments to national competition success, outstanding progression rates, and innovative restaurant concepts, award-winning college restaurants share a common goal: preparing the next generation of hospitality professionals for successful careers.
We are proud to work in partnership with the AA Hotel & Hospitality Services to recognise and celebrate these achievements, and we look forward to seeing this year’s entrants showcase the very best of hospitality education.
We would like to wish all colleges taking part in this year’s competition the very best of luck and thank them for their continued commitment to excellence in hospitality education. We look forward to seeing their creativity, innovation, and passion showcased throughout the competition.
