Diploma in Travel & Tourism

The DDP for Travel and Tourism is pleased to announce the publication of the draft final Line of Learning Statement for the Diploma in Travel and Tourism. This document outlines the vision for the Diploma in Travel and Tourism and is the result of extensive research with a wide range of employers nationally, higher education, further education, schools and other interested groups. The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority will be consulting on the Line of Learning Criteria during May and June 2008 which may result in changes being made to the Line of Learning Statement following this consultation. A final version of the Line of Learning Statement will therefore appear here by 31 July 2008. The Line of Learning Statement is a detailed document written and owned by the relevant Diploma Development Partnership for a particular line of learning that outlines the rationale, vision and content at levels 1, 2 and 3 that should be contained as part of the Principal Learning component within the Diploma qualification. This document is intended to inform and guide the development of the line of learning Criteria.

Background

The development of the Diplomas will be the most radical change to 14 - 19 education for many years. The Diploma is a new route that will run parallel to GCSEs, GCE ‘A' level and Apprenticeships. It will appeal to young people who wish to stay in full-time education and will offer a blend of high quality general and applied learning. Students will be able to progress to employment, training, further or higher education.

Successful development and implementation of the Diploma will require unprecedented levels of co-operation and co-ordination between Employers, Schools, Universities, Colleges, Awarding Bodies and training providers – our stakeholders. Sector Skills Councils will be responsible for leading and facilitating the Diploma Development Partnership (DDP). The Travel & Tourism DDP is a partnership between People1st and GoSkills, the SSC for the passenger transport sector.

Travel and Tourism 14-19 Diplomas

The new 14 -19 Diplomas in Travel & Tourism are due to be launched in some schools and colleges from September 2010 and rolled out nationally from 2013.

The DDP is developing the content of the Diploma (known as the ‘Line of Learning'). The employers that sit within the People1st and GoSkills footprint will be consulted extensively on the needs and requirements of their sectors. This will provide the basis on which the Line of Learning statement and criteria is developed.

Diploma Structure

The Travel & Tourism Diploma will consist of three areas of learning:

  • Principal
  • Additional/Specialist
  • Generic
  • Work Experience

Principal learning will develop the knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes relevant to a sector or sectors using realistic contexts and materials as much as possible.

Additional/specialist learning provides breadth to the diploma and will allow learners to specialise further or to select units, which will complement their programme.

Generic learning will provide the learner with the essential skills in preparation for successful employment, training and further study, including Maths, English and ICT.

Levels of Qualification

Diplomas at levels 1, 2 and 3 will be available for learners across the 14 -19 age range.

  • Foundation Diploma (Level1) is broadly comparable, in terms of average length of study and achievement, to a programme of five GCSEs at grade C or below.
