Apprenticeships

What's in it for you?

For employers – a practical, cost-effective way to recruit and train new staff.

For young people – the chance to learn from experienced professionals.

With apprenticeships, everybody wins – including the industry

How it works

Thousands of employers have caught on to the financial and practical benefits of apprenticeships. They get:

  • The chance to recruit and develop new staff
  • Government funding to support their investment in the programme
  • Committed employees with the practical skills their business needs.

The apprentice gets:

  • Valuable work experience, support, and the chance to build skills essential to their job and future career
  • Some financial support while they're learning
  • The chance to achieve a national standard and hold recognised qualifications.

Of course, an apprenticeship is a two-way contract. Employers should be prepared to help arrange an appropriate training plan – along with supervision at work, wages, time to learn and study, quality assurance for their training, and Health and Safety in the workplace. Apprentices need to be keen, motivated and well informed about the work they'll be doing.

What's in it for us?

People 1st are working with government, educators and employers to increase completion rates for apprenticeships. This will give the sector a larger pool of qualified employees, trained to a standard that reflects the needs of employers via the Sector Skills Agreement.

The facts at a glance

  • Employers in the hospitality and travel industries take on around 25,000 new apprentices every year
  • Most apprentices are aged 16-19, but the scheme is open to candidates aged up to 25.
