FAQs

Who maintains the register?

People 1st, the sector skills council for hospitality, passenger transport, travel and tourism, maintains the National Register of Professional PCV Driver Trainers.

People 1st, working in partnership with employers, is responsible for developing and maintaining national occupational standards for all occupational areas in the sector including driver training.

The performance standards required by those included on the register are based on the standards set by the National Occupational Standards (NVQs).

Why is a register necessary?

The register encourages all operators and driver trainers to demonstrate that they are meeting the national standards set by the industry.

By adding themselves to the register, employers and driver trainers can show their employees, the public and authorities that they are committed to raising industry standards and have recognised the need to constantly develop drivers' skills.

Who is eligible to be on the register?

Entry to the National Register of Professional PCV Driver Trainers is limited to those who can show that they hold the appropriate PCV licence, are regularly involved in PCV driving instruction, and have achieved Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Passenger Carrying Vehicle Driving Instruction (QCF).

How do I achieve the NVQ?

The NVQ is awarded through approved centres by the awarding body as having the facilities and trained assessors needed to deliver and assess this qualification.

The centre will register individuals with the awarding body and advice on any training required, dependent on current experience.

The awarding bodies that provide the Driving Instruction qualification are Edexcel and EDI.

When will I be included on the register?

Registration on the National Register of Professional PCV Driver Trainers will be given when you can support your application with a copy of Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Passenger Carrying Vehicle Driving Instruction (QCF).

What happens when my registration expires?

The national occupational standards and associated NVQ units that inform the registration criteria are revised regularly.

As such, you will need to be reassessed against the standards in the instructional techniques units, and any further units which have been introduced, every three years.

Approximately three months prior to your registration lapsing, People 1st will contact you and ask you to complete the National Register of Professional PCV Driver Trainers reapplication form.

Once the form and attached information have been received and checked, a new registration certificate will be sent to you.
