Retention
It could be argued that the issues of retention and recruitment are chicken and egg – our research clearly highlights the scale of the retention issue and while the sector has had a recruitment focus for the last 20 years talented people have left the sector for other pastures.
- Retention is worse than in any other sector of UK plc
- By 2012 staff turnover will have cost businesses at least £6.2 Billion
Research shows that employees and employers find it hard to understand what the many available qualifications mean. It is therefore important to identify a clear link between skills and the levels of ability that employees need at various stages of their career.
Research suggests that when the question of why do people leave is asked, employers answer Money whereas employees rate other factors more highly:
- Career Development
- Poor Management
- Working Hours
- Staff shortages
According to the Reward Management Survey 2006 from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), employers will fail to achieve maximum return on investment with regards to pay and benefits unless they involve and train line managers. The survey found that 51% of organisations believe lack of skills and ability of line managers limits the effectiveness of pay and benefit strategies. A further 36% cited insufficient communication as one of the problems and 26% said the attitude of line managers is an issue

"I believe staff leave the hotel industry due to the long hours of work, split shifts and the unsociable hours they have to work. Wages can also be a problem"

"Having good staff training not just on the job instruction - being left to it with no clear idea of what expected of you. Job or career development. Clear communication from managers to staff - clear targets, objectives - so staff know how important their role is to over all company performance"
