Best practice - Nations & Regions
What's in it for you?
Research confirms what many of us already know - that there is a desperate need for a sector skills strategy relevant to all regions of the UK.
As the body responsible for skills development in our sector, we are addressing that issue on a national, strategic level - but as an employer, you have first-hand knowledge of what is happening in your region.
How change is happening
The challenge of shaping our industry to meet 21st century needs is huge. It demands imagination and innovation, wide consultation and research, and expert planning and implementation. The good news is, the infrastructure to do this is already in place.
Devolution is an important and appropriate part of central government strategy, with funding and decision-making devolved to each nation:
Our role
People 1st acts as a central hub, driving research and developing strategies at national level, while connecting with organisations operating at regional level. Here is a summary of our multi-faceted role:
National strategist
We develop national skills strategies that, in turn, guide the development of regional strategies. We inform and involve all our key partners to ensure that these strategies benefit employers and employees alike.
Informed advisor
Our strategic focus means that established organisations can continue to deliver operational solutions. We help to confirm that these solutions are suitable, based on the employer and employee needs highlighted in our research and consultation processes.
Research leader
We are currently researching the needs of employers and the propriety of existing learning provision through the Sector Skills Agreement. The findings will drive all strategies developed in this area. Unsurprisingly, perhaps, we have discovered that the same critical issues are common to all British regions.
Funding guide
We will work in partnership with the Regional Development Agencies to ensure that public sector expenditure is aligned with the development of skills that employers need, as revealed in our "smarter spending" review. This way, we can ensure that funding is directed to the areas where it can best develop talent, profitability and productivity.
Want to get involved?
While we work with all relevant organisations, we are ultimately driven by the needs of the sector. That means you! If you're keen to:
